Dogs Training Series Why Protect Your Dog From Fleas
You might think that fleas are nothing more than a minor irritant, like mosquitoes, but if you’ve ever seen a dog with a severe flea infestation, you’ll think otherwise.
Dogs can develop skin allergies, balding, skin rashes, dermatitis and other conditions including worms if fleas are not controlled. In severe cases, the dog will become restless.
Flea bite allergy is a common condition that causes the dog to scratch incessantly. If the scratching does not provide sufficient relief, the dog will bite at his skin and tear out patches of hair trying to get rid of the itch.
Dogs can become extremely irritated and sensitive to other disturbances, such as a family member attempting to play with the dog or even to pet him. Dogs in distress are likely to bite family members out of frustration.
It’s important, therefore, to make sure that your dog is clear of fleas. This can be difficult if your dog has the run of the yard or goes on frequent trips to the park or is allowed to run free. Fleas are everywhere and are spread by wild animals. Squirrels are a particularly troublesome source as they tend to carry them from nest to ground on a regular basis.
While it’s not feasible to eliminate fleas from your yard, it is relatively easy to rid them from inside your house and from your dog.
There are many products available that will do the trick. You can get flea collars for your pet, use a flea spray or bathe your dog with flea soap. Some products that you give your dog orally will protect your dog for up to a year. If you have multiple pets, treat them all so the fleas have nowhere to hide and cannot be transferred to your treated animals.
Of course, treating the dog isn’t enough. Fleas jump off your dog from time to time and hide in carpets, bedding, and other soft materials. If your dog has his own chair or is allowed on your furniture, the fleas will take refuge there until feeding time. Then, they will seek the closest source of food which includes humans, dogs and other household animals.
To be sure you get rid of as many fleas as possible, take the animal bedding outside and shake it out, then spray it well with a flea repellent. Better yet, wash it if possible. Spray into the carpets and along the baseboards of your rooms, especially those where the dog and any other house pets hang out.
Follow the directions on the flea treatment products for best results. It will likely take several treatments before the fleas are all gone, but they will return. It’s important to maintain monthly spraying during the warm months when fleas proliferate to ensure the best protection for your animals and your family.

How to Bath Your Dog First Dog Training Tool to Proper Dog Behavior
Filed from the writers of :
Bathing a dog needs to be given more emphasis. This is because of the fact that if you are careless in bathing, the animal may end up having some infections. For example, if you don’t close the ears with large cotton ball, the water may enter into ear canals and may cause some ear infections with signs like constant discharge from the ears and shaking of head.
All-About-Dog-Obedience.comFrequency of bathing actually depends on the breed of the dog. If the dog is of a hairy type like the cocker spaniel, then the bathing is to be carried out once in six to eight weeks. If these breeds are bathed too frequently, then the skin and coat loose the protective characters. However, when the dog has defecated on the skin due to the frequent digestive upsets leading to diarrhea, to avoid the bad smell, the dog may be subjected to frequent bathing some times by the owners.
Take more care in avoiding some irritant soaps or human soaps. The soap materials used for human beings are not suitable for dogs. Similarly, many human shampoo products are having some ingredients that are not suitable in the proportions that are to be used in case of dogs. Hence, always try to use the shampoo products that are mentioned mainly for use in dogs. Take more care in using any new product.
Always have good time and patience for products required for bathing in one place with availability of water source. Dogs love the sprinkling of water, river, and oceans. Even when you are using bathtub, have everything in one place and then start bathing of the dog. Try to have a leash, conditioner, towel, and shampoo in the bath place.
Conditioner is of helpful to make the combing activity easier later. Bathing should be a convenient activity to both the dog and the owner. This should not be a burden.

Don’t Ignore Female Dog Incontinence
Many dog owners don’t know what to do when incontinence in female dogs becomes an issue. This problems affects many pets, but their owners either ignore it or are too embarrassed about it to take their dogs to the vet. In this article, we’ll look at causes and treatments for female dog incontinence.
Your Dog Leaks Urine
You’ll probably notice that your female dog is leaking urine, especially when she’s sleeping or she’s very relaxed. In fact, nighttime is when the problem usually happens. Owners will notice that when the dog gets up, she leaves a puddle or wet spot on the carpet.
The urine leaking is a nuisance for you, but it’s more annoying for your dog. Urine is caustic and causes severe skin irritation if it’s in contact with the skin for any length of time. An incontinent female dog will also lick herself more, trying to keep the area clean. She may even lick until the area is raw. Leaked urine burns the area even more, so you can see it becomes a vicious cycle for your dog.
Incontinence in female dogs can also lead to more bladder infections, due to the urinary sphincter being too relaxed. This makes it possible for bacteria to enter her urethra and cause urinary tract infections.
Is Your Dog At Risk For Female Dog Incontinence?
This problem is common in spayed females, especially the larger breeds, although it can occur in just about any breed. The problem usually shows up when you dog is between three and five years old.
Your dog has a muscular valve at the base of her bladder that keeps urine from dripping out. In female dogs, estrogen helps the muscles of the bladder to stay strong. You can see that if the hormonal balance in your dog’s body changes, she may not be able to hold her urine.
When a dog is spayed, her uterus and ovaries are removed. This means that her body is no longer making estrogen, which can lead to a dog that leaks urine.
Treatment For Incontinence In Female Dogs
Vets usually treat this problem with DES, or diethylstilbestrol. This is a replacement for estrogen. It’s given on a daily basis to start, with the dosage gradually being reduced to once a week.
Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) is also used to treat female dogs that are leaking urine. This drug is not a hormone, but it was an ingredient in diet pills until it was banned for human use by the FDA. It’s still approved for veterinary use, though. Side effects can include irritability, appetite suppression, and changes in blood pressure.
Your dog will need to be on one or both or these drugs for the rest of her life.
Natural Treatment For Dogs With Urinary Incompetence
Many people are becoming more interested in herbal pet remedies. Humans have been using herbal treatments for various conditions for centuries, and in many parts of the world, they still do. It’s to be expected that pet owners would wonder whether these herbal pet remedies would work as well for their pets.
The answer is that they do. These herbal and homeopathic remedies are safe and effective, with no risk of side effects. They’re also reasonably priced and easy to find.
You do need to buy your natural pet remedies from a reputable company that stands behind its products and is committed to providing formulations that are safe for your pet.
Don’t be embarrassed about your incontinent female dog any longer. Do yourself and your dog a favor and discover how a natural treatment for dogs with urinary incompetence is both effective and safe.

Dogs Training Tips: Bathing a Dog Can Be Fun… and Beneficial
We tend to think one of two ways about bathing a dog. Some people think dogs don’t need to be bathed more than once a year or so, while others believe in bathing their dog every month.
While bathing is beneficial, it can cause problems if it is done too frequently.
Dogs have natural oils in their skin and fur, just like humans do. Washing too often will cause drying, leaving your dog at risk of scratching and developing sores. Keep in mind that there are some benefits to having natural oils present. For one, they provide protection from skin bacteria.
Make bathing a dog fun for you and your pet, but take care. There are certain things you must watch.
1. Protect your dog’s ears. If water and soap enter the ear canal, an infection can develop. This can be temporary but it can also cause serious damage. Infections can harm the ear drum and lead to deafness. There are familiar signs that your dog might have an ear infection. He will shake his head and you will see a constant discharge from the ears.
To ensure this doesn’t happen, gently plug your dog’s ears with cotton balls. Do not force them into the ear canal. Simply place them securely at the ear entrance to block water from entering. When the bath is over, be sure to dry the inside of the ears as some moisture is likely to gain access. Use a cloth over your finger. If you choose to use a cotton swab, be extremely careful not to enter too deeply into the canal or you could puncture the ear drum.
2. Use a proper dog shampoo as they are formulated specifically to protect your dog’s skin and fur. Human soaps can be too harsh and irritating. As well, there is the chance your dog will be allergic to the scents that are added to human products.
3. Frequency of bathing will depend on your particular dog’s breed. Longer haired dogs will require more frequent washing than short haired breeds. If you have a Spaniel or other hairy dog, schedule the baths to once every two months. Other breeds can go 6-8 months. However, if your dog spends a lot of time outside, he is likely to become dirty faster. Regulate your baths accordingly.
It’s important to start your dog off right with the bathing routine. Be patient and compassionate. Once you scare your dog, it will be more difficult bathing him in the future. Try to make it fun. Dogs love having water sprinkled on them, and running into rivers and lakes.
Set up your bath outside when possible and encourage him to run through it. Use a toy to distract him from the water. When his energy has subsided, begin the bath. You might want to put him on a leash so he can’t run away.
Be sure to collect all the equipment first: soap, conditioner, towel and some sort of bowl to pour water over him. Water running out of the hose might be too cold, however water in the bath will have warmed to a comfortable temperature.
Show your dog that bathing is something to enjoy and he will look forward to your next session with excitement.
